Consumer Rights Act 2015

If goods are not as described, not fit for purpose, or not of satisfactory quality, the Consumer Rights Act 2015 sets out remedies against the trader. Short deadlines can apply, especially in the first 30 days. That is the GOV.UK outline — not a promise you will get the money back.

Write the refund letter GOV.UK: consumer protection rights

Keep the order number, photos, and a screenshot of the listing. Say what you want: refund, repair, or replacement. This is a letter to the seller, not a chargeback and not a court claim.

Why it matters

A dated letter is easier to show than a chat thread. It does not freeze a card payment, and it does not start a claim. If the trader does not put it right, GOV.UK and Citizens Advice set out what people usually do next.

How it works

  1. Fill in the seller, the order, the item, what is wrong, and the remedy you want.
  2. Print the letter or save it as a PDF. £5, UK bank transfer.
  3. You send it. Attach photos and the listing. Offer to return the item once the refund is agreed.

A filled-in letter

12 March 2026 Example Shop Order: EX-44019 Item: kettle, listing “1.7L stainless, as described” Received: 4 March 2026 The item is not as described / not of satisfactory quality. The kettle leaked from the base on first use. The seam is split. Photos attached, with the listing that said it was new and watertight. Under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 I am entitled to a remedy.
